Atlanta police say it was a chance encounter in the lobby of a luxury midtown Atlanta condo building that evnetually cost Dr. Eugenia Calle her life.
According to authorities, Shamal Thompson, 22, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with killing Calle, 57, in her penthouse apartment at the Aqua Midtown building on 10th Street at West Peachtree Street some time on Tuesday.
Calle was in the process of selling her condo, when Thompson was in the complex with a real estate agent. Thompson reportedly heard the news and proceeded to make plans to visit the condo.
After making an appointment and visiting the condo, Thompson allegedly attempted to rob Calle and struck her in the head with a fatal blow.
Police got their best lead in the case when Thompson, who had a previous criminal history with several arrests, reportedly used one of the victim's credit cards in the city to purchase some items.
Calle, who was a physician and a cancer researcher, was engaged to be married.
