Gwinnett County agreed to pay the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) an estimated $2.5 million to cover the cost of relocating the County’s water and sewer lines along State Route 20 between Ozora Road and Brand Road. The work can now be scheduled and contracted alongside the road construction work on the project.
“This partnership provides better control of water utility relocations, coordinated scheduling, and improved efficiency during the road construction activities,” said Acting Department of Water Resources Director Lynn Smarr.
The State Route 20 widening project south of Grayson picks up where the widening that the state is currently completing from just south of Lawrenceville to Grayson ends. Road construction will replace the existing two-lane road with a four-lane divided roadway from Ozora Road to Brand Road, just north of the Walton County line.

The project will also include a raised median, sidewalks on both sides of the road and drainage improvements.
Through coordination with GDOT, Gwinnett County has provided the engineering, environmental and land acquisition services for the widening project, which has been identified by the state and the County as a potential stimulus project.
A formal Memorandum of Understanding agreement with GDOT was accepted Tuesday by the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners.
