Gwinnett Water Project Garners Award

A Gwinnett water project has been recognized by the “Academy Awards” of the engineering world. Gwinnett’s Department of Water Resources (DWR) and local engineering consultants Keck and Wood Inc. of Duluth, accepted the Engineering Excellence HONOR Award this past Saturday at the Carlos Community Center in Atlanta.

The $8.2 million project expanded and upgraded a 30-year-old pump station that brings raw water from Lake Lanier to the County’s Lanier Filter Plant.

DWR’s Deputy Director Ron Peters said, “Complex hydraulic modeling showed that we could save money and improve operations by replacing old electric motors, power supplies and motor starters while keeping some existing components to reduce potential power surges on startup.” Board Chairman Charles Bannister added, “Gwinnett County is proud of the hard work and engineering excellence provided by our local engineering companies to assist our Water Resources Department.”

The award, presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Georgia, qualifies the project to compete for a national ACEC honor that recognizes engineering excellence and dedication to making the work done for both public and private entities truly outstanding.
