Chairman Sam Olens was recently honored by the United Way as Cobb County's Volunteer of the Year at the 24th annual Heart In Hand volunteer recognition award program. Milton James Little Jr., president of the Metropolitan Atlanta United Way, said Olens was selected for his hard work and dedication. "You are everything a volunteer could be, or we could ever want," Little said. "Someone who is passionate, someone who is committed and someone intolerant of doing things a certain way just because that's how they've always been."
Olens has volunteered with the United Way for more than eight years and served as a representative on the Regional Commission on Homelessness. He also serves on the Board of Directors and as the 2008 Cobb County campaign chair. More than $9 million was raised during the campaign.
