Artist/Band Submissions Open for ATHFEST 2009

ATHFEST 2009 will be held June 25-28 in historic downtown Athens, a town long renowned for its thriving music scene.


For the past 12 years, this annual music and arts festival has showcased the best in local, regional, and nationally recognized Athens-based talent. More than 175 bands and artists will perform over the course of the weekend, with most performances free of charge to the public.


The festival also includes a juried artisan market, KidsFest, and much more. From 2005-2009, ATHFEST has been included in the “TOP 20 Events for June” by the Southeast Tourism Society.


ATHFEST 2009 is currently accepting submissions from artists/bands interested in performing at the event, as well as from artists for the juried artisan market. Information is available at www.athfest.com. The deadline is April 1.


Each year the Athens-based label Ghostmeat Records releases a compilation of local music, primarily of bands that will perform at festival. Ghostmeat Records founder Russ Hallauer produced this year’s CD, the 12th such release, which includes 16 diverse tracks, most of them previously unreleased, by Patterson Hood, The Corduroy Road, Widespread Panic, Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band, The Arcs, A Post War Drama, Holy Liars, Marty Winkler with Michael C. Steele & Davis Causey, Deaf Judges, Jesse Mangum, The Warm Fuzzies, Brave New Citizen, Curley Maple, Magic Missile, The Starter Kits and The Quick Hooks.


The CD will be available May 19 at AthFest.com, Ghostmeat.com, select record stores, iTunes, and at then at AthFest merchandise booths. The ATHFEST CD release party is Friday, May 15 at 8 p.m. at Tasty World (FREE). Performers will be announced shortly.


ATHFEST 2009 CD sponsors and patrons include Flagpole, Bulldog 103.7, CDMan.com and Chase Park Transduction. Proceeds from the sale of the ATHFEST 2009 CD benefit AthFest Inc.


This year also marks the introduction of AthFest AfterSchool, a series of educational performances for children in the Athens area with a goal to expose students to all aspects of music, from various genres to the range of career choices in the music field. The performances are currently taking place in after-school programs at area recreation centers with plans to bring the program into local schools.


AthFest is seeking musicians interested in participating in the program and local educators who are interested in bringing the program to their schools.
