Police: Alleged Killer Returned to Scene of Crime

The murder of cancer researcher Dr. Eugenia Calle took on an added twist, as police revealed that her alleged killer, Shamal Thompson, 22, returned to the scene of the crime after Calle had been hit in the head by a fatal blow.

According to police accounts, Calle and Thompson had a chance encounter inside the Aqua Midtown condo complex where Calle lived.

Calle, who was engaged to be married, was in the process of trying to sell her unit.

She reportedly ran into Thompson and a real estate agent inside the building, noted to them that her place was for sale, and continued on. Thompson reportedly made plans to see her unit during the day on Tuesday and went unescorted up to the 20th floor where she lived.

Once inside the unit, Thompson allegedly tried to rob Calle, the two struggled, and he fatally hit her in the head. After taking several items from the unit, Thompson left. Calle's body was discovered later in the evening by her fiance.

Apparently wanting more items from the unit, Thompson reportedly returned to the complex the next evening and tried to use Calle's ID card to re-enter, but a security guard became suspicious and Thompson left.

Thompson was later captured by authorities, who claim the alleged killer used Calle's credit card to purchase a number of items.

As of Thursday evening, Thompson was being held in jail without bail
.

Calle was a physician and cancer researcher. She made ground-breaking discoveries linking cancer with obesity and had been the director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American Cancer Society since 1994.
