Atlanta Police Dept. Opens Mini-Precinct at EUHM

In an effort to better serve the community and keep the neighborhood safe, Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) and the Atlanta Police Department (APD) are partnering together to open APD’s newest mini- precinct on hospital grounds. The grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new facility took place on Monday.

Located in a 1,026-foot space in the W.W. Orr Building on Peachtree Street, the new Zone 5 mini-precinct will house approximately 30 sworn police employees (lieutenants, sergeants and officers) who are responsible for patrolling Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. This new mini-precinct is one of six in Zone 5.

“The partnership between Emory Healthcare and the APD to open this mini-precinct will bring our patients, visitors and employees an extra measure of safety, while increasing police visibility for the surrounding community,” says Dane Peterson, COO, Emory University Hospital Midtown. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Discussions to place a mini-precinct at EUHM have been ongoing for several years. APD officials say the hospital’s location on Peachtree Street is conveniently located and easily accessible to Midtown and Downtown Atlanta, Interstate-85 and Interstate-75.

Atlanta Cop Ends Up on Wrong Side of Law

An Atlanta police officer spent some time on the other side of the law after being arrested for reportedly fighting with his wife, who is also a cop.

According to authorities, a fight ensued recently between officer Ricardo Moyet and his wife, Shannon, at City Hall East, where officers go to fuel up their squad cars. A third officer reportedly stepped in to break up the altercation, which turned physical.

Ricardo Moyet was booked at the Fulton County Jail and returned to work, where he is on non-enforcement administrative duty for now.

Moyet was charged with simple battery following the fight. The other two officers involved were not charged.

Husband of Former Police Sergeant Pleads Guilty to Child Porn

An Atlanta man who is the husband of a former city police sergeant is looking at a minimum of 10 years in jail for producing child porn.

In court on Thursday, Terrill Crane pleaded guilty to a child porn charge. His wife, Tonya Carroll-Crane, has admitted she destroyed pictures of her husband being sexually active with young girls. Crane, 49, could get a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

The U.S. Attorney said Crane, who will be sentenced in March, snapped pictures of himself and others in sexual acts with young girls, some of whom were as young as middle school age.

Crane's wife was fired by the Atlanta Police Department after her involvement in destroying the pictures became known.

Police Department's SOS Receives Grant

The Atlanta Police Department Special Operations Section has been awarded a grant from the State of Georgia that will assist in making the highways a safer place to travel.

The grant is in the amount of $239,400 and will be used through Sept. 30, 2009. The grant is to assist the Department's SOS Division with a traffic safety initiative and to strongly enforce driving under the influence.

APD has a Highway Enforcement Aggressive Traffic Unit (HEAT) that is responsible for traffic safety and the enforcement of driving under the influence. The HEAT Unit has made a significant impact as they made over 1,200 DUI cases as well as an additional 16,000 traffic cases last year. The officers in the unit have specialized training in the field of traffic enforcement and driving under the influence.

The APD HEAT Unit was named HEAT Unit of the year in 2005 as well as 2007. They have also been recognized on the state and national levels as a unit within the past five years by receiving numerous awards. Several officers have been recognized with officer of the year awards in addition to the awards received by the unit.
